| - CAN YOU WALK ON IT? One of the first questions folks ask when they see my floorcloths is "Do you really walk on it? It's too pretty to walk on." YES, yes yes. The materials, techniques, and craftsmanship I put into every floorcloth ensures a long lasting floor covering.
- HOW LONG DOES IT LAST? WILL IT WEAR WELL? Again, under normal use and care, your floorcloth should last many years.(Flamenco dancing and stiletto heels are not recommended! Regular shoes are fine.) If paint or varnish ever shows wear, your rug can be touched up.
- HOW DO YOU MAKE IT? Each floorcloth starts with an inspiration. It might be an idea from a client or a visitor at a show (please email me your ideas.) It might be something from a historic home or something I've seen while out and about. The design is worked out and a pleasing color scheme is chosen. A heavy weight canvas is cut, primed and painted with the background color. I hem the canvas, paint the hem with a second coat of paint, then paint a second coat on the front. The design is painted and the floorcloth is varnished with multiple coats of finish. It is signed, dated, and numbered. Now, it is ready to bring art to your floors - art you can walk on.
- HOW DO I WASH IT? Simply wipe it clean with a damp cloth, sponge, or mop. The occasional stubborn stain can be removed with mild dishwashing liquid and water. Rinse and dry afterwards. .
- WILL IT SLIP OR SLIDE? Yes, floorcloths, especially those not anchored by furniture, can slip. To prevent that, use a rug pad, carpet tape, bits of poster putty, or rubber mesh shelf lining under the rug. A floorcloth laid on tile with deep grout needs a thicker pad, like a rug pad to prevent conforming to the grout lines.
- ARE THERE ANY DOWNSIDES? Yes, besides potential slipping (see the preventatives above), floorcloths cannot be folded because that might crack the varnish. Also, they cannot be used on carpet. Carpet is too uneven to provide support for the varnish.
- WHAT ARE THE UPSIDES? Floorcloths are durable, easy to clean and protect your floors (especially high use areas like the kitchen). They break up large expanses of flooring, provide a focal point, and repeat accent colors in your decor. They do not harbor dust mites so they are good for folks with allergies. They save water, detergent, electricity used to launder throw rugs. They are ART for your floors, art you can step on.
- HOW SHOULD I STORE IT? Store your floorcloth flat or rolled on a rigid tube. Never fold it as that may crack the finish.
- WHERE WOULD I USE A FLOORCLOTH? The 24" x 36" mats I make are perfect in a doorway, in front of the kitchen stove or refrigerator, or in front of the kitchen or bath sink. Larger sizes are good on any solid floor in a dry area.
- WHO BUYS YOUR FLOORCLOTHS? My floorcloths live in houses in West Virginia, Alabama, and New York. One lives on a sailboat in Long Island. One lives in a historic Klutho house. One was spotted in a house on the Riverside Avondale Historic Homes tour. Another is in an Australian home.
- DO YOU DO CUSTOM WORK? YES. I make custom sizes and can match colors from your decor. The price for larger sizes or unusual colors is slightly higher. See Ordering/Contact Us for details.
